This is a work in progress.  Because it has such a very broad reaching impact, it must be very carefully worded and considered.

A proposed amendment to the constitution of the United States

In God We Trust

We the people of the United States in order to perfect our Union with a common goodness do trust in God to bless good people and thus bless a good nation.   We seek to be a blessed nation so that we may continue to bless our future generations and be a blessing to our neighbors and the world.

The union’s greatest duty is to encourage the goodness of all its citizens and not restrict the influence of that common goodness in government.  The government shall be influenced by the goodness of its citizens and not separate itself from it.  The government shall act in a way that is supportive of each man’s faith and shall not use any of the powers granted to it by the people to promote or restrict any one citizen’s faith.  It shall act promoting and supporting all individuals’ faiths at home and at large equally.

Innovation, growth and positive change is the blessing we receive from our individual diversity.  Consistent strength and resolve from generation to generation are the blessing of our common values.  Toleration is the atmosphere that encourages spiritual expression and growth.  No citizen shall be required to bare the burden of another’s faith but is expected to respectfully tolerate its expression.

We strive as a nation to maintain fundamental principles of moral value while making place for each individual to examine and express differences.

Our common goodness is established in our fundamental principles of right.  The fundament principles and moral values that keep our nation strong and consistent are:

Marriage shall be the union of one man and one woman.  That bond is the foundation of family strength which is the core strength of our nation.

Children are a sacred charge to their parents and a blessing to the nation.  Except for imminent harm to their physical health which requires community action, the children will be freely reared by the parents fully responsible for the decisions about their life until adulthood.  It is in the interests of the United States to offer basic assistance to parents for the fundamental education and health of minor children.  Citizens that understand their community and government are better able to meet their responsibilities to it.

Prayer is the opportunity for any man to communicate with his God at home freely and in the public arena respectfully.  Each citizen is free to find his individual understanding of spiritual truth and freely and respectfully share it.  The gathering of any people to express their common faith must be given the highest respect.  Restrictions on public displays of spiritual expression are forbidden except when that expression is done in a way that is intolerable to the community at large.  Toleration of our differences is a strength that we promote and acceptable ways of expression are required.

Laws that address issues of faith shall not address the merits of any faith but find a balance which establishes common respect for all faiths and how they are expressed in life.  Rules which govern expression of religious thought must be fairly applied to all religious expression equally.  Rules and laws are to be crafted in a manner which provides the greatest expression without disruption consistent with other free expressions of speech. We strive for the balance between spiritual fulfillment and expression and public actions which are intolerable to a reasonable man.

As with any liberty, there comes responsibility.  Religious and spiritual liberty in the public arena will not be used as an opportunity to shock and pervert the community sensibilities. Although the spiritual influence and impact of the majority is encouraged, the rights of the minority must be reasonably protected.

God bless the United States of America.
